Rond maart komen Nikon en andere merken met digitale spiegelreflexcamera's in dezelfde prijsklasse als de Canon EOS 300D.

Service engineers at Nikon's German Service Centre discovered during routine servicing recently that a Nikon F5 had achieved 1,092,904 shutter releases without fault. This translates into about 35 kilometers of film.

To put the 1,092,904 shutter releases into context, it equates to 34 hours of continuous shooting at 8 frames per second. The camera is one of the bodies used in the Matthaus Photographic Studio in Nuremburg, Germany.

Nikon Germany’s Service Manager said: “This is the most shutter releases I have ever seen. The F5 shutter is, in my opinion, definitely more durable than any other camera’s. Because the F5 in question was well looked after and serviced regularly, that makes it last longer,” he added.

Het weekblad Hello! moet Catherine Zeta Jones en Michael Douglas bijna 21.500 euro schadevergoeding betalen wegens het ongeoorloofd afdrukken van stiekem gemaakte huwelijksfoto's van het Hollywood-stel.

Het High Court in Londen bepaalde vrijdag ook dat het blad OK!, dat van de sterren wel toestemming had de bruiloft in 2000 te fotograferen, ongeveer 1,5 miljoen euro moet krijgen, aldus de BBC.

Zeta Jones en Douglas hadden 880.000 euro schadevergoeding geëist, OK! wilde ruim 2,5 miljoen euro zien. OK! zei grote schade te hebben geleden door de actie van de concurrent. De uitgave met de huwelijksfoto's verkocht aanmerkelijk minder goed dan gedacht.

Bjørn Opsahl agrees: "Lene has sold over a million records, and thus is in the division where you suddenly can afford something like that. This is probably mostly about the credibility you get with it by hiring Anton Corbijn. And judging from the Marlin-pictures we have seen up until now, it tastes a bit like left-hand work from Corbijn's side. He's been much better previously."

Wellicht gaat Kodak toch niet zo digitaal als een aantal hoera-journalisten de afgelopen maand blèrde. Veel grote aandeelhouders willen dat Kodak afziet van zijn heilloze plannen om zijn kaarten te zetten op een onzeker digitaal avontuur.

Federal regulators have given billionaire financier Carl Icahn a green light to buy a big stake in Eastman Kodak Co., which provoked a potential investor revolt this fall by betting its future on digital photography. The veteran corporate raider got permission from the Federal Trade Commission late last week to buy as much as $500 million of Kodak stock, which would make him the photography company's biggest individual shareholder with a 7.3 percent stake.

While Icahn's motivations remain murky, "he is in there to make money, one way or another," said analyst Ulysses Yannas of Buckman Buckman & Reid in New York. "Obviously people think there's value there or they wouldn't be doing this," echoed Shannon Cross of Cross Research in Short Hills, N.J. "With 7 percent, he's going to be applying pressure to Kodak. Whether it amounts to a change in strategy, that's to be seen."

Two weeks ago, a potent group of investors angered by Kodak's hard shift staged a meeting in New York to examine ways to prod the company to reverse course. It's unclear whether Icahn is allied with that group, made up of scores of institutional shareholders that control an estimated 25 percent of Kodak's stock.

Nachtwey, born in 1948 in Syracuse, N.Y., grew up in Leominster, Massachusetts, USA and studied Art History and Political Science at Dartmouth from 1966-70.

Maar wat kan je anders verwachten van iemand die acteert dat hij fotograaf is en acteert dat hij verstand heeft van fotografie?

Kritische vragen hoef je van Barend & van Dorp ook niet te verwachten, zoveel is duidelijk.

Nermina Nuhodzic is an 18-year-old photographer from Bosnia-Herzegovina. She spent several years of her childhood living through civil war. Twenty-two members of her family were killed over the course of two nights. Now, she spends time walking the streets of her city, taking pictures of the changing lives of people in Sarajevo. One of her photographs shows an elderly woman hunched down on the side of the street, begging. Two young women are passing by, talking happily. They don't seem to notice the older woman.

Ms. Nuhodzic says she shot the picture spontaneously, but it shows a deeper rift between the past and future, a story that is not being told about recovering from war. "I grew up as a child in a war and lived as a refugee many years outside of Bosnia, and then I came back and I feel like I'm not heard enough," she says. "That the people don't know what happened to the kids that grew up in this cruel war, and nobody actually did care."

A collection of her black-and-white photographs is on display along with artwork from other children and teenagers in Sarajevo, Lukavica and New York, in a show called "Aftershocks: Art and Memoirs on Growing Up in the Aftermath."

Tsuyoshi Kikukawa, de voorzitter van het Japanse imaging-bedrijf Olympus, voorspelt dat het gemiddeld aantal pixels op een doorsnee digitaal fototoestel van drie miljoen vandaag naar vier à vijf miljoen volgend jaar zal stijgen. Meer en meer toestellen zullen ook met een groothoeklens uitgerust worden. Ondanks de voorspelde prijsdalingen zullen de toestellen van Olympus prijzig blijven, geeft Kikukawa toe. Hij is niet van plan mee te doen aan de aan de gang zijnde prijzenoorlog.

Het Europese Hof voor de Rechten van de Mens in Straatsburg buigt zich donderdag over een klacht van prinses Caroline van Monaco tegen Duitsland. Volgens de prinses wordt de privacy in de bondsrepubliek onvoldoende beschermd.

Caroline, die is getrouwd met prins Ernst August von Hannover, voelt zich in haar mensenrechten en persoonlijke veiligheid aangetast, omdat ze constant wordt achtervolgd door paparazzi. Zo hebben Duitse tijdschriften haar afgebeeld terwijl ze fietste, paard reed of op het strand was.

Eerder verwierpen Duitse rechters een vergelijkbare klacht van Caroline, de oudste dochter van prins Rainier van Monaco. Zij oordeelden dat de prinses een publieke figuur is, woor wie algemene interesse bestaat. Een keer kreeg ze wel gelijk. Toen verbood een rechtbank de publicatie van een foto verbood waarop Caroline met haar kinderen was te zien. Volgens de rechter genieten kinderen een grotere bescherming.

De uitspraak van het Hof wordt over enkele maanden verwacht.

De advocaten van Johan Cruijff werden woensdag verrast door Uitgeverij Tirion uit Baarn. Die haalde opeens een exemplaar van het fotoboek Johan Cruijff de Ajacied te voorschijn. Het boek, dat Cruijff verboden wil zien, is al gedrukt en ligt sinds woensdag in de winkel.

Woensdag diende het kort geding bij de rechtbank in Utrecht. De advocaten van Cruijff willen dat de uitgeverij het boek, met daarin foto's van fotograaf Guus de Jong, terughaalt uit de winkels omdat het portret- en merkrecht van Cruijff wordt geschonden. De voetbalgoeroe wil zelf zijn populariteit te gelde kunnen maken. Hij werkt op dit moment exclusief mee aan een ander boek, ook al met foto's van Guus de Jong.

Ook de supportersvereniging van Ajax was woedend. Die had zich als partij in het kort geding gevoegd, omdat de vereniging vijf jaar geleden van fotograaf Guus de Jong al diens kleurenfoto's en bijbehorende auteursrechten heeft gekocht. Het omstreden boek bestaat uit zwart-wit foto's van De Jong. Volgens de supportersvereniging zijn sommige foto's die in het boek zwart-wit zijn afgedrukt, in werkelijkheid kleurenfoto's uit haar archief.

De advocaat van Tirion beriep zich op de vrijheid van meningsuiting. Iedereen mag volgens hem een boek maken over een publiek figuur. Tirion heeft de foto's te goeder trouw gekocht en de uitgever wil Cruijff daarvoor een vergoeding betalen. ,,Het is een financiële kwestie en het is buiten proporties om dan een boek te verbieden'', stelde raadsman T. Kolle.

Geheugenkaarten voor digitale fototoestellen laten de gebruiker vaak in de steek. Dat blijkt uit onderzoek van het ICT-tijdschrift Winmagazine, waarvan de resultaten vrijdag worden gepubliceerd.

Winmagazine onderzocht de zes typen geheugenkaarten die in Nederland het vaakst over de toonbank gaan. Daarbij keek het blad vooral hoe snel de kaarten informatie wegschrijven en of de kaarten het opgegeven geheugen bieden. Volgens een woordvoerder van Winmagazine konden alle kaarten minder data opslaan dan in de gebruiksaanwijzing werd beloofd.

Zo bleek uit de test dat een xd-picture card met een geheugen van 128 megabytes maar 119 megabytes, ongeveer 64 foto's, kon bewaren. Ook de kaarten compact flash, secure digital en de multimedia card beloofden deze opslagruimte maar bleven steken op 121 megabytes. Verder liepen veel van de geteste kaarten regelmatig vast.

Reporters Without Borders protested monday against the arrest of photographer Selim Jahangir, of the national daily newspaper Janakantha, for taking pictures of a police check in the northeastern city of Rajshahi and supposedly "endangering" the life of a magistrate involved in the operation.

"This is a plain abuse of authority," said secretary general Robert Ménard in a letter to home affairs minister Altaf Hossain Chowdhury. "How can a photographer endanger a magistrate's life just by taking pictures of such an event ? We ask that you order his release and the dropping of charges against him."

Jahangir, who also works for the local paper Sonali Sangbad, was arrested on 1 November in the centre of the city as police, accompanied by a magistrate, Abdul Majid, were checking people's IDs. Despite the magistrate's order that he leave, he had taken pictures of an incident when one passer-by denounced the operation as "police harassment." Police seized his camera, mobile phone and motorcycle and he was imprisoned as journalists went to the police station to ask why he has been detained.

The next day, a court refused to release him on bail and the authorities told his lawyer he had been arrested for endangering the magistrate's life, disobeying his orders and not presenting his driving licence and the log-book of the motorcycle, which police accused him of stealing. Local journalists' organisations staged a protest march on 2 November calling for his release.

Het Fotografica Museum heeft zijn deuren geopend in de Meipoortstraat in Doesburg. Volgens initiatiefnemer Fokken is dit het enige museum in Nederland dat het ontstaan en de ontwikkeling van het fotograferen laat zien. Om de unieke verzameling intact te houden heeft Roel Fokken in januari een stichting in het leven geroepen waarbij hij als een van de drie bestuursleden wel een vinger in de pap houdt.

Het museum beslaat twee verdiepingen. In vitrines worden verschillende apecten van de fotografie uitgelegd. Middenin het museum staat een grote glazen vitrine met een overzicht van de eerste camera obscura (voorloper van de fotocamera) uit 1840 tot de modernste digitale camera.

Links bij de ingang van het museum staat het originele fotowinkeltje van de familie Radstake uit Doesburg. De winkel dateert uit begin jaren negentig en is op een enkele lik verf na authentiek. In de verschillende vakjes en schapjes liggen fotospullen die in die tijd werden verkocht.

Tegenover het winkeltje staat een fotostudio uit die tijd voor portretfoto's. De fotograaf (net als de modellen een pop) gebruikt een camera uit 1880. Aan zijn linkerkant staat een metershoog statief met bovenop een vogeltje dat hij met luchtdruk kon laten bewegen. "De uitspraak 'kijk eens naar het vogeltje', werd vroeger echt gebruikt", legt Fokken uit. "Mensen waren in die tijd een beetje bang en verlegen. Om hen iets vriendelijker omhoog naar de fotograaf te laten kijken, werd het vogeltje gebruikt."

In die tijd duurde het wel vijf minuten voordat een foto voldoende belicht was. Zo lang stilstaan kon natuurlijk bijna niemand. Maar daar was ook iets op gevonden, blijkt in het museum. Mensen werden tijdens het poseren bij de nek en de heup vastgebonden aan een ijzeren standaard.

Het museum is van dinsdag tot en met zondag van 11.00 tot 16.00 uur geopend.

Shirin Ebadi, the 2003 Nobel Peace Prize winner, has formally asked to represent the family of a Canadian photojournalist who died while in Iranian police custody. Zahra Kazemi was arrested on June 23 for taking pictures outside an Iranian prison during student protests. She died of head injuries in after being interrogated by intelligence officials.

Mohammed Reza Aghadam Ahmadi, 42, an agent with the reformist-controlled Intelligence Ministry, has been charged with "semi-premeditated murder" in Kazemi's death. His trial opened in October but has been delayed for about five days on Ebadi's request because she needs more time to study the case.

Ebadi's decision to represent the Kazemi family was welcome news for Reporters Without Borders, but the son of the slain photojournalist said Ebadi can represent his grandmother but not him since he doesn't recognize Iranian justice.

Each issue of National Geographic Magazine contains a few dozen of the stunning original photos that have become its trademark. But to get these, thousands are considered and rejected. Now people can see a few of the also-rans.

A special issue of the magazine, "National Geographic 100 Best Unpublished Pictures," is on sale on newsstands. "We asked photographers to go back through their work and find the frames they wish we'd been able to fit into the original article," said National Geographic editor Bill Allen. "It became a labor of love." Along with the photos are captions containing the story behind the photo from the photographers themselves.

The reasons a picture didn't make the magazine varies. Some stories are dropped and some pictures loved by photographers are not the choice of editors.

One photo shows a young couple relaxing on their bed in a shack in Louisiana. It was scheduled to lead a 1973 article until the editor discovered the couple wasn't married. "I guess it was the times. He didn't want an unmarried couple sitting there in bed," writes photographer C. C. Lockwood.

Daytona Beach hosts the first "Daytona Beach Film Festival" from Nov. 5-9.

Attending the festival will be photojournalist James Nachtwey, whose Oscar-nominated documentary "War Photographer" will be shown during the event.

This November, NikonNet's inspiring monthly "Legends Behind the Lens" honors the career, photographs and works of Jodi Cobb, renowned photojournalist. Following in the footsteps of such great photo essayists as W. Eugene Smith, Cobb uses her images to tell a story, striving to include as much of the narrative as she can by carefully researching and preparing for every assignment.

Jodi Cobb has spent over 20 years telling stories. She was one of the first photographers to cross into China when it opened to the West. She has also covered stories in Thailand, Saudi Arabia, the Caribbean and parts of the Middle East. She has also documented traditions and lifestyles in other cultures. Jodi spent a total of 6 months over a three-year period living with Japan's geisha, and documented their lives. Her images were turned into a book titled "Geisha: The Life, the Voices, the Art."

A sign reading 'Photographers and Journalists, Area Closed, DO NOT ENTER' is placed outside a barricade in Bethlehem. Applications for an Israeli press card will from now on have to be submitted to the Shin Beth internal security service, according to new forms received by media organisations here Monday.

Cards will not be delivered to people "convicted of an offence against state security and/or an offence which bears moral turpitude". The Foreign Press Association (FPA) in Israel said it was "concerned" by the new press credentials application procedure and urged its members not to fill in the new forms "pending clarification". The head of the GPO assured AFP that the new measure was not politically motivated.

The GPO and the Israeli government have repeatedly voiced objections to the foreign media's coverage of the ongoing conflict with the Palestinians, accusing some organisations of anti-Israeli bias. There are up to 1,000 foreign journalists posted in Israel. The GPO stressed that the move was chiefly aimed at reducing the number of credentials delivered to Israelis: "Instead of delivering 8,000 press cards to Israelis who are not all really working as journalists, we could deliver no more than 1,000".

Since January 2002, the GPO has refused to deliver press cards to hundreds of press technicians and Palestinians working for foreign media organisations.
